The ex-Green Bay Packers kicker, Mason Crosby, has inked a deal with the New York Giants, and it appears that he will be handling kicking duties on Christmas Day.
Former Green Bay Packers kicker Mason Crosby is poised to make his return to the NFL, this time with the New York Giants, in their Christmas Day matchup against the Philadelphia Eagles. Crosby, who was not re-signed by the Packers before the 2023 season, is set to join the Giants on their practice squad, with the expectation of being elevated for the upcoming game.
The move comes as incumbent practice-squad kicker Cade York is headed to injured reserve due to an aggravated leg injury sustained during practice. York had taken over the role after Randy Bullock, the kicker who delivered a game-winning field goal against the Packers just two weeks prior, injured his hamstring in the first quarter of the last week’s game against New Orleans.
The Giants have experienced significant challenges in the kicker position throughout the season. In early November, veteran Graham Gano was placed on injured reserve with a knee injury. York, initially on the 53-man roster, was later surpassed by Bullock.
Mason Crosby, a Packers legend, spent 17 seasons with Green Bay, never missing a game and becoming the franchise’s all-time leading scorer. However, the 39-year-old was not part of the Packers’ plans after they selected rookie Anders Carlson in the draft. Crosby briefly joined the Los Angeles Rams’ practice squad in early December but was released within a week without making an appearance in an NFL game.
The Giants, one of six teams playing Monday games this week, will have the experienced Crosby available for the nationally televised Christmas Day game against the Eagles. Following this matchup, the Giants will host the Rams on New Year’s Eve, a game that holds particular significance for the Packers as they pursue a playoff spot and track the performance of the Los Angeles team.
