Joey Velazquez and Cameron Calhoun from the Michigan football team have opted to enter the transfer portal.
LOS ANGELES — The Michigan football team has experienced a reduction in its roster by two positions.
On Thursday, freshman defensive back Cameron Calhoun and graduate linebacker Joey Velazquez both initiated the transfer portal process, as confirmed by a program representative to the Free Press.
This development occurred shortly after specific members of the defense and coordinator Jesse Minter provided insights into Monday’s Rose Bowl matchup against No. 4 Alabama.
Hailing from Columbus, Ohio, Velazquez, a graduate student, also played baseball for U-M. Standing at 6 feet and weighing 222 pounds, he amassed seven tackles over five seasons and recovered a fumble on special teams against Wisconsin in 2021. Velazquez showcased his baseball prowess with a .255 batting average (70-for-275), nine home runs, and a .340 on-base percentage. As an outfielder and left-handed hitter, he contributed to the Wolverines’ victory in the Big Ten tournament in 2022 and their advancement to the NCAA tournament in 2021-22. Velazquez secured four Big Ten championships and earned seven varsity letters at U-M.
Calhoun, a four-star prospect from Cincinnati Winton Woods, participated in 13 defensive snaps this season, featuring in the UNLV game and contributing on special teams against Bowling Green.
Notably, Calhoun, an early enrollee last season, joined nine freshmen at Fiesta Bowl practice. This season, with 10 freshmen enrolling early, eight made the trip to Los Angeles.
In total, four Wolverines have placed their names in the transfer portal, with running backs CJ Stokes and Leon Franklin expressing their intentions to explore other opportunities earlier this month.
