The Commanders are considering the possibility of starting quarterback Sam Howell over Jacoby Brissett in their upcoming game against the 49ers.

The Washington Commanders are set to start quarterback Sam Howell against the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday, according to Aaron Wilson of KPRC Houston. Initially, Jacoby Brissett was slated to be the starter, but a hamstring injury on Friday forced the Commanders to revert to Howell as the starting quarterback. This decision comes after the Commanders seemed to have moved away from Howell by opting for Brissett earlier in the week. Now, due to the injury, Howell is being thrust into the starting role with minimal practice reps with the starters.

The 49ers, facing Howell instead of Brissett, are likely to find this matchup less challenging, as Howell has been prone to turnovers, leading the league with 17 interceptions. The 49ers defense, which leads the league with 19 interceptions, should have ample opportunities to capitalize on Howell’s tendency to be reckless with the football. The Commanders’ lack of an efficient running game also diminishes concerns for the 49ers defense, which had previously viewed this as a potential weakness.

Anticipating a limited offensive output from the Commanders, the expectation is that they may score no more than 14 points, especially considering the uncertainty surrounding their motivation for the game. The 49ers defense sees this matchup as an opportunity to perform well and regain momentum, presenting itself as a perfect game for them to bounce back.
