Is the Los Angeles Rams a Potential Trade Destination For Mac Jones?

This offseason, the New England Patriots may trade Mac Jones, and the Los Angeles Rams may wind up being the young quarterback’s final destination.

According to NBC Sports Chicago’s Logan Reardon, Jones would thrive in the low-pressure environment of the Rams, where he could learn from Sean McVay. According to Reardon, McVay and San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan run similar offensive schemes, which could work in Jones’ favor.

Strangely enough, Jones has also been linked to the 49ers as a possible destination.

The Patriots selected Jones, who attended the University of Alabama for his college football career, with the 15th overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft.

The 25-year-old quarterback had a respectable debut season in the NFL, throwing for 3,801 yards, 22 touchdowns, and 13 interceptions. Despite his somewhat low stats, he even made it to the Pro Bowl. After that, Jones started to decline the next season, concluding with 2,997 yards, 14 touchdowns, and 11 picks in 14 starts.

Jones reached his lowest point in 2023 as his decline persisted. Jones completed 64.9 percent of his passes for 2,120 yards, 10 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions through 11 starts. He also had a passer rating of 77. Bailey Zappe replaced him on the bench after that.

The general consensus is that the Patriots will cut ties with Jones in the upcoming offseason, but it is unclear how much a trade could actually bring in.

Last spring, New England did shop Jones, but it did not receive any offers that it thought merited further investigation.

Of course, Mac Jones would be Matthew Stafford’s backup in 2024 if the Rams decide to pursue him.

Los Angeles is 9-7 and has already guaranteed a spot in the postseason. This Sunday is its regular-season finale against San Francisco.
