Rams Coach Sean McVay’s Insightful Approach Amid Early-Season Struggles

The Los Angeles Rams faced a challenging 3-6 start to the 2023 season, but a strong turnaround after the bye week propelled them to a playoff berth, finishing with a 10-7 record.

Despite external pressures and analysis during the early struggles, head coach Sean McVay adopted a strategic approach, aiming to block out external noise. While players may have been aware of the criticism, McVay emphasized maintaining focus on internal dynamics.

“I think our players are probably a lot more in tune just because of them being on social media, things like that,” McVay explained. “I’m aware of it because of the questions that [the media asks], but I try to stay pretty blind to it. We try to be as inside out as possible.”

Even amidst a slow start, the Rams remained unfazed, particularly post-bye week, finishing the season 7-1 and securing the No. 6 seed in the NFC playoffs.

“What I loved… is the way these guys continue to come to work and the consistency at which they did it was on display really when we were 3-6,” McVay highlighted. “Then when we were able to finish up 7-1, I think we were getting healthy. I think we started to find our identities. I love the consistency of our coaching staff. It’s about coming together at the right time and continuing to gel as a group.”

As the Rams gear up for a crucial matchup against the Detroit Lions in the Wild Card round, McVay will reunite with former quarterback Jared Goff, and quarterback Matthew Stafford will make a return to face his former team. The stage is set for a significant showdown, with kickoff scheduled for 5 p.m. PT, airing on NBC.
