The Cleveland Browns are still in the wait-and-see phase, but they anticipate having Nick Chubb back at some time in the upcoming campaign.
Chubb hurt his knee against the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 2, which ended his season. Two procedures in the off-season are necessary. In recent weeks, Chubb has spent more time at the facility; he even captained the Dawg Pound during the Browns’ last home game.
When asked about Chubb’s condition, Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski was unable to provide any particular updates regarding his development.
Stefanski stated, “I don’t have an update other than to say he’s doing great.” “He is making progress and fulfilling his responsibilities, if not surpassing them. We’ll observe the outcome.
Without Chubb, the Browns’ running game was passable but inconsistent. Their 45-14 Wild Card loss to the Texans was indicative of it. Cleveland only gained 56 yards on 20 attempts.
Jerome Ford gained 813 yards on 204 carries to finish as the Browns’ top rusher.
Since being selected in the second round of the 2018 NFL Draft, Chubb has been a mainstay for the Browns. During the previous season, he ran for 1,525 yards and 12 touchdowns. He had over 1,000 yards of rushing for the fourth straight season, and his career 5.3 yards per carry ranks among the best in the NFL.
Prior to his injury, Chubb had a fantastic start to the season. With just 28 carries, he amassed 170 yards, or an average of 6.1 yards per run.
Moving ahead, Chubb’s contract and his availability following the injury are the issues. Chubb’s contract has no guaranteed money left, but in a year where the Browns must be frugal, he will count roughly $16 million against the cap. If he gets freed, his dead cap is only $4 million.
The Browns may modify Chubb’s contract so that it includes incentives contingent on his return.
Kareem Hunt returned to the Browns shortly after Chubb suffered a season-ending injury in September. He received limited interest as a free agent this offseason. Hunt had a few visits with other teams but the chance to return to Cleveland was the right fit at the right time.
Stefanski praised Hunt for his aggressive running style even though he didn’t get much yardage.
Stefanski remarked, “He gave us enormous, enormous value.” He’s a fighter; I adore the way he moves. gave us a tremendous lift.
The Browns have been Hunt’s home team for the past five seasons. Though it will have to wait at least another year, he has been transparent about his intention to bring a Super Bowl to Cleveland.
Hunt declared, “That’s my ultimate hope, no matter what—even if I’m playing for another team.” “Shoot, I would most likely be supporting them at the parade.”
