A former draft disappointment for the Los Angeles Rams has transformed into a rapidly emerging football coach.

The Los Angeles Rams secured their Super Bowl victory through strategic moves such as trading first-round picks for impactful players and discovering hidden talents in the mid-late rounds. As the Rams’ successful approach continues to yield positive results, one of their former draft disappointments has managed to stay engaged in the sport.

The focal point of the 2009 NFL Draft class was the current Rams quarterback, Matthew Stafford, chosen as the first overall pick. While the overall strength of the 2009 draft class has not stood out significantly over a decade later, it has produced numerous All-Pro selections and perennial Pro Bowl nominees.

In contrast to the success stories, offensive lineman Jason Smith did not emerge positively from the 2009 NFL Draft. Despite being a first-team All-American from Baylor, the 6-foot-5 offensive tackle was selected by the Rams as the second overall pick. Initially considered a promising choice with many NFL analysts expecting him to develop into an All-Pro left tackle, Smith instead became one of the Rams’ most significant draft disappointments. Now, a decade after his last appearance in an NFL game, Smith has discovered a compelling way to stay actively involved in football.
