Wolverhampton Wanderers’ head coach Gary O’Neil has made hints that the team is having trouble arranging for a new striker to arrive in January.

The West Midlands team has performed well in the last third of the Premier League in 2023–24, scoring 30 goals in 21 games and generally playing good football.

However, Wolves have been lacking in the final third as a result of allowing c and Fabio Silva to go on loan to Rangers and Eintracht Frankfurt, respectively.

Their problems with FFP have been extensively reported, but as a result of the double departure and other players quitting Molineux, space on the pay bill was created, which raised hopes for the addition of new players.

O’Neill has reinforced this in other interviews, stating that the Englishman is aware that the club’s recruitment squad is working behind the scenes.

However, O’Neil disclosed to reporters during a press conference held prior to Sunday’s FA Cup fourth-round match between Black Country derby and West Bromwich Albion that the task is proving to be more challenging than first thought.

O’Neill stated: “Me, Matt Hobbs, and the recruitment team have done an awful lot of work on a couple of options,” as reported by the Express & Star.

“We met yesterday, and it appears that they won’t be financially feasible for us at this time. We’ve resumed our examination of potential alternatives.

“It’s disappointing firstly because we felt like we were making some headway on a couple, but it looks like they’re not going to be doable.”

In recent months, Wolves have been connected to several strikers, notably Armando Broja, during which Chelsea is rumored to be accepting offers.

Wolves would, however, need to be willing to commit to at least a loan with an obligation to buy, reportedly for at least £35 million, in order to close a deal, and it is likely that such a trade is now off the table.

The same is conceivably true for Hugo Ekitikeof Paris Saint-Germain, who is free to leave the French powerhouses but hasn’t yet found a team that will agree to his terms.

Teen Nathan Fraser is anticipated to stay in the first team squad behind players like  and Hwang Hee-chan if Wolves do not recruit a new striker.
