The Browns’ 2023 season did not go as planned, but thanks to strong defense and strategic moves by general manager Andrew Berry, Cleveland managed to turn a seemingly lost season into a playoff appearance. Berry recently discussed the future of key players with ESPN’s Jake Trotter.

The season took an unexpected turn after running back Nick Chubb suffered a season-ending injury after only two games. This forced the Browns to rely on second-year running back Jerome Ford and re-signed veteran Kareem Hunt, but the combined efforts fell short of replacing Chubb’s production.

With injuries affecting the quarterback position as well, the team signed veteran quarterback Joe Flacco, who eventually became the starter and led the Browns to a 4-1 record before a first-round playoff exit.

Despite Chubb carrying a $15.83 million cap hit in 2024 and having a contract with an option for the team to cut him with only $4 million of dead cap, Berry emphasized that he expects Chubb to remain with the team in 2024. Berry stated to the media, “No one in the organization wants to see that carry in Pittsburgh be the last time that he carries the ball for the Cleveland Browns. Obviously, there are things that we’ll have to work through, but moving on from Chubb would not be our intention.”
