Eagles LB Coach Interview with Former Jaguars DC Mike Caldwell

Mike Caldwell, a former defensive coordinator for the Jacksonville Jaguars, might be headed to the NFC East. Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports that Caldwell will have a second offseason interview with the Philadelphia Eagles. This time, it is for Vic Fangio’s defensive staff, specifically for the open position of linebackers coach. The Jaguars fired Caldwell the day after the 2023 season concluded, following in the footsteps of other defensive staff members including inside linebackers coach Tony Gilbert, defensive line coach Brentson Buckner, defensive quality control coach Sean Cullina, safety coach Cody Grimm, defensive quality control coach Tee Mitchell, senior defensive assistant Bob Sutton, and passing game coordinator/cornerbacks coach Deshea Townsend. In 2022, Doug Pederson, the head coach of the Jaguars, hired all coaches except Sutton and Gilbert. Gilbert and Sutton were hangovers from earlier coaching staffs. The defense gave up 30 points or more in four of the Jaguars’ six losses in the second half of the season, including two contests against Jake Browning and Joe Flacco, after the team had been playing lights out for the first eight weeks of the season. Pederson bemoaned missed assignments and defended-side missed tackles during the Jaguars’ recent six-game losing streak of 1-5. As a result, in their season-ending defeat, the Jaguars gave up 28 points to the Tennessee Titans, including 21 points in the first half and more than eight yards per carry. “Not until I thoroughly examine the recording. However, it was evident that we had made the same mistakes in tackles, gap integrity, rules, and other areas. I would be willing to guess that it would appear today. However, it is difficult to fully comment on that until we really dig into the tape,” Pederson stated following the Jaguars’ Week 18 loss to the Tennessee Titans, 28-20. “The guys and players were there, and the crew and staff were the same. It was just a novel experience similar to what we had had the previous year. Must win those championship games. Josh Allen, an outside linebacker for the Jaguars, stated following the season, “Play meaningful games in December to February. That was our main focus last year.”
