Ian Foster, the manager of Plymouth Argyle, remains keen on bolstering his squad before the transfer window closes.
Plymouth Argyle has made five new acquisitions since the beginning of January – three through loan deals and two permanent signings, while several squad members have departed.
Foster explains that additional signings will depend on budget constraints, with securing an extra forward being a priority.
“We have room to bring in a player – or players – depending on who becomes available and the associated costs,” Foster commented. “We’ll monitor the situation over the next week and hopefully strengthen the squad.”
Tottenham youngsters Ashley Phillips and Alfie Devine, along with Leeds United midfielder Darko Gyabi – all previously coached by Foster during his time with England’s youth teams – have arrived on loan. Defender Matthew Sorinola and midfielder Adam Forshaw have also joined on free transfers.
On the other hand, winger Tyreik Wright has moved to Bradford City on loan, and defender Macaulay Gillesphey has secured a permanent deal with Charlton Athletic, while four loanees from Argyle have been recalled by their parent clubs.
“With Alfie being cup-tied and Tyreik departing, our squad depth in that area of the pitch is thin for the upcoming game,” Foster noted. “Therefore, strengthening the forward positions may be a consideration, but we’re open to all possibilities and player availability.”
Foster, in his inaugural club managerial role, previously worked with England’s youth teams and served as Steven Gerrard’s assistant at Saudi Arabian side Al-Ettifaq. His reputation with the Football Association, highlighted by leading England’s Under-19s to a European title in 2022 and guiding the Under-20s to the World Cup in Argentina, makes Argyle an attractive option for top-tier clubs seeking Championship experience for their best young talents.
“The interest from big clubs in sending their players to Argyle has increased, which is positive,” Foster added. “However, decisions will be based on cost factors, and we’ll prioritize what’s best for the club. If a player is available and can contribute positively, we’ll pursue that option; otherwise, we’re content with our current squad.”
