Stuart Gray, a former player for both Celtic and Scotland Under-21, passed away at the age of fifty, according to the Glasgow club.

Gray, the son of legendary Leeds and Scotland footballer Eddie Gray, passed away in a Yorkshire hospice following a cancer diagnosis in the previous year. After rising through the club’s youth systems and making his debut in a win over Aberdeen in May 1993, the full-back played 32 games for Celtic. He also had a loan spell at Morton.

In 1998, Gray was acquired by former Celtic manager Tommy Burns to play for Reading. He then played for Rushden and Diamonds and Oxford, making over 300 games in the first team during his career. In the 2009 film The Damned United, which chronicled Brian Clough’s brief tenure as Leeds manager, Gray portrayed his father.

“Everyone at Celtic is deeply saddened by the news that former Celt Stuart Gray passed away after illness at the age of 50,” a statement from the team stated. Everyone at Celtic Park is sending their condolences and prayers to Stuart’s family and friends during this extremely difficult time.

“My thoughts and condolences to Eddie Gray and family after the loss of his son and my former teammate Stuart Gray,” former Celtic player Craig Burley posted on Twitter. RIP, Stuart.
