The Boston Celtics’ guard is willing to extend his contract.

Holiday’s primary responsibility is defense, even though the Celtics have benefited from his offensive. Holiday was more specifically supposed to take Marcus Smart’s place in terms of toughness and defense. Holiday, who is arguably the best perimeter defender in the NBA, and Derrick White’s backcourt combination have improved the Celtics’ defense as a whole. White discussed the three-time NBA Teammate of the Year’s compatibility with the Celtics in an interview with J.J. Redick:

According to White, “Smart’s trade was shocking.” “After that, I realized that, in contrast to last year, there would be a lot more opportunities and I would need to step up with the ball in my hand. Everyone said, “We still need you to be aggressive and how we envisioned it before we got Jrue,” when we brought Jrue along.

The Minnesota Timberwolves currently lead the NBA in defensive rating, with the Celtics holding the second-best rating. Boston is second in the league in blocks per game, just behind the Oklahoma City Thunder. The Celtics’ ability to limit the number of points scored by turnovers in a game—14, which ties them with the Houston Rockets for the NBA lead—is most noteworthy.

Must the Celtics give Jrue Holiday more time?
It is important to remember that negotiations regarding the Celtics’ potential extension of Holiday will need to wait.

The Celtics can sign Holiday to a contract extension for up to four years, but they must wait six months per the NBA’s Collective Bargaining Agreement.

Since the Celtics acquired Holiday in October, an extension is not formally possible until April. However, it seems that Holiday is amenable to signing an extension during the season:

Holiday last signed an extension with the Bucks in April 2021; the season ended in mid-May. “My last extension was during the course of the year,” Holiday remarked. “I believe that we can discuss it and get ready for games and the future at the same time.”

Recall that all six members of Boston’s starting lineup have contracts that expire at the end of the current campaign. White’s contract, however, ends in 2025. While the Celtics might decide to keep both guards, securing Holiday’s contract now offers long-term security.

Even though Holiday is currently the second-oldest player on the Celtics behind Al Horford at 33, Boston should definitely lock him up for the long term.
