At Manchester High School, record-breaking scorer Tyler Horky is leaving a lasting impression.
Michigan Mike Ahrens thought he might not get the job when he went in for an interview to be the head coach of the varsity boys basketball team at Manchester High School.
Even though the initial interviews with the school board and administrators went fairly well, he was not sure he would be given the keys to his old school.
He later got to know Tyler Horky.
During Ahrens’ tour of the facilities, including the gym and locker rooms, the then-junior frequently questioned Ahrens about his views on basketball, his experiences playing the game, and his plans for Manchester basketball going forward.
He was asking me questions and attempting to understand my background, so I assumed I was going through my second round of interviews for the day, Ahrens said. I am not sure if that made a difference in the hiring process, but I am glad I had the opportunity to meet him before accepting this position.
He is a unique child, and I knew he would support me in developing a program properly. He is been really helpful to me in accomplishing that. Tyler is an excellent example of a player who understands and leads the program, and it is always positive when your best player shares that vision.
Horky, who had only averaged 12 points per game as a sophomore, was able to put himself in a position to make plays for his team thanks to the new coaching staff. As a junior, he averaged 24 points, three rebounds, and three assists per game for the Flying Dutchmen.
