Appalled, embarrassed, and perplexed: Viewing the Black Country Derby through the eyes of someone who isn’t a football enthusiast.
The Sunday match got postponed as law enforcement addressed the violence. I had eagerly anticipated covering the Baggies versus Wolves derby. Although not a football enthusiast, I relish major events and cherish any opportunity to engage with Black Country locals.
It’s accurate to say that I witnessed both the finest and most disappointing aspects of human behavior on Sunday. The majority of individuals I interacted with were enthusiastic and eager, but their demeanor shifted to shock and dismay when it became evident that hooliganism would mar the significant occasion.
The day commenced at the Hogshead pub in Wolverhampton, a fervent football establishment serving as a gathering spot for excited Wolves supporters heading to the Hawthorns. Opening at 6 am, the pub provided patrons a venue to convene and indulge in drinks prior to the match. Tables were laden with pints and minimal food, a pattern mirrored throughout the area, likely contributing to the ensuing events.
