An AP source reveals that the Patriots are bringing on Jeremy Springer, a Rams assistant, to serve as their special teams coordinator.
According to a source familiar with the matter, the New England Patriots have reached an agreement with Jeremy Springer, currently an assistant with the Los Angeles Rams, to assume the role of their special teams coordinator, as reported by The Associated Press. The source, who requested anonymity, shared the information on Wednesday, as the team has not officially announced the hiring yet. The agreement was initially reported by NFL Network.
Jeremy Springer, aged 34, joins the Patriots after spending two seasons with the Rams, where he worked as a special teams assistant. Prior to his tenure with the Rams, he spent eight years coaching in college, with stints at UTEP, Texas A&M, Arizona, and Marshall. He held the position of special teams coordinator at Texas A&M, Arizona, and Marshall during his college coaching career.
Springer’s primary responsibility will be to enhance the performance of the Patriots’ special teams, which ranked 28th in the NFL this past season according to defense-adjusted value over average (DVOA), an advanced metric measuring efficiency. In 2022, the Patriots’ special teams ranked last by that metric.
Moreover, the Patriots are expected to undergo changes in their special teams dynamics as longtime captain Matt Slater is anticipated to retire this offseason.
Meanwhile, Jerod Mayo, the newly appointed Patriots head coach, is still in the process of interviewing candidates for the offensive coordinator position, following Bill O’Brien’s departure to Ohio State. Additionally, DeMarcus Covington, the team’s defensive line coach since 2017, is expected to be promoted to the role of defensive coordinator.
