Detroit Lions Offensive Coordinator Ben Johnson will remain with the team in 2024 despite rumors of interest in head coaching positions.
Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson has communicated to the Washington Commanders and Seattle Seahawks that he will remain in Detroit, according to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero.
Despite significant interest from various teams, Johnson has opted to stay with the Lions for the 2024 season, marking his commitment as the team continues its pursuit of its first Super Bowl victory.
Johnson’s journey with the Lions began in 2019 when he joined as an offensive quality control coach. Over time, he ascended through the ranks, serving as tight ends coach, passing game coordinator, and eventually assuming the role of offensive coordinator last season.
The transformation under Johnson’s leadership was evident. The Lions, previously ranked 25th in points scored and 22nd in yards gained in the 2021-22 season, saw significant improvement. Jared Goff’s performance notably improved under Johnson’s guidance, as the team’s offense surged to fifth in points and fourth in yards.
This season, the Lions achieved a 12-5 record and clinched their first division title since 1993. Despite falling short in the NFC championship game against the San Francisco 49ers, the team’s remarkable progress under Johnson’s direction has been noteworthy.
While Johnson was considered for head coaching positions last offseason, he attracted even more attention this time around. However, he ultimately decided to stay with the Lions, driven by a sense of unfinished business and a desire to build on the team’s success from the previous season.
Although Johnson’s decision brings relief to Lions fans, the team may still face potential changes in its coaching staff during the ongoing head coaching cycle. Commanders officials were set to meet with Johnson and Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn, with Washington expressing interest in interviewing Glenn for its head coaching vacancy.
Glenn, recognized as the league’s top defensive coordinator in an NFLPA survey, has been a vital part of the Lions’ coaching staff. Depending on the outcome of Glenn’s interview with Washington, Detroit could retain both coordinators for what promises to be an exciting 2024 season for the franchise.
