Rangers would consider selling Jack Butland on Deadline Day only if they receive a substantial offer of £20 million, as stated by Derek Ferguson. The ex-Rangers player expressed concern about the possibility of losing the “absolutely phenomenal” England goalkeeper, stating that it would be a “frightening prospect.” He also emphasized his belief that the goalkeeper is superior to the current England number one, Jordan Pickford.
On Wednesday (January 31), STV indicated that Nottingham Forest made inquiries about Butland, while the Daily Record reported that another undisclosed Premier League club showed interest in the 30-year-old.
Having joined Ibrox on a free transfer in the summer, Butland is highly regarded by Ferguson, who considers him among the top goalkeepers in the club’s history. Ferguson believes that only a substantial offer would be considered for a sale that exceeds the deadline.
“We acquired Butland on a free transfer. Now, I’m speaking based on his performances this season, which have been outstanding. It’s not just about his on-field abilities, but also the way he carries himself.
He possesses a commanding presence and stature that you expect from a goalkeeper. The fans adore him, and I would say it would take nearly £20 million before even considering a transfer. I’m serious; he’s that exceptional.
In my opinion, he’s better than Pickford. I genuinely believe that. Over the past years, we’ve been fortunate with goalkeepers like Andy Goram and Allan McGregor, and Butland fits into that elite category. He started at Manchester United, and we’re poised to get the best years from him. At his current age, keepers tend to improve.
When I watch English games and highlights, he has been absolutely phenomenal. The thought of losing him is quite unsettling, and while I understand the influence of money, that’s why I’ve thrown out that substantial figure of £20 million. I think any offer above £10 million would have to be seriously considered as it would be a fantastic deal.
But how do you replace someone like him? We have McCrorie, who is frequently in the Scotland squad, but I believe Butland is on a different level from everyone else in this division. He should, in my view, at least be in the England squad for the Euros. It’s not just about what he does in the game; it’s the complete package, and that’s why he resonates with the fans.”
“He understands the essence of the club, a phenomenon observed in many players who transition from England to Rangers. The likes of Butcher, Chris Woods, Ray Wilkins, and Trevor Francis have all experienced it—something special happens when you join Rangers Football Club, and for some reason, players develop a deep affection for it.
Jack Butland has earned the admiration of the fans, and, in return, he holds a genuine affection for playing for Rangers. Hopefully, this positive connection persists for a long time.”
