Jeff Hafley has achieved success throughout his coaching career, consistently demonstrating an impressive ability to develop players at various levels. The Green Bay Packers are eager to have him lead their defense. Hafley’s recent experience includes a four-season stint as the head coach for Boston College (2020-23), where he guided the Eagles to bowl eligibility in three of those years.
In 2021, under Hafley’s leadership, Boston College’s defense excelled, ranking No. 3 nationally in passing yards allowed (173.5 per game). Additionally, they achieved top-30 national rankings in total defense, red-zone defense, first downs allowed, third-down percentage, team passing efficiency, and defensive touchdowns. The Eagles led the ACC in both fewest penalties and fewest penalty yards.
Before his tenure at Boston College, Hafley served as the co-defensive coordinator/secondary coach for Ohio State in 2019. During that season, he was a finalist for the Frank Broyles Award and the 247 Sports Defensive Coordinator of the Year. Hafley played a key role in Ohio State’s defense ranking No. 1 nationally in yards per play, No. 2 in total defense and passing yards allowed, No. 3 in scoring defense and sacks, No. 7 in rushing defense, and No. 1 in red-zone defense.
In his previous role as an NFL assistant coach, Hafley contributed to the success of teams like the San Francisco 49ers (2016-18) and the Cleveland Browns (2014-15). Notably, the 49ers’ passing defense improved significantly during his time there, ranking No. 11 in the NFL in 2018. Hafley’s coaching journey also includes stints at various colleges and universities, where he consistently demonstrated his coaching prowess and player development skills.
