In 2022, cornerback Jaire Alexander of the Green Bay Packers received a four-year contract extension, making him the highest-paid defensive back in NFL history. He immediately made it worthwhile with an All-Pro campaign. But by 2023, things were becoming more hazy.

Alexander appeared in just seven games during the regular season and the two postseason games due to multiple injuries (ankle, shoulder, and back) and a team-imposed ban for actions that were harmful to the Packers. Alexander concluded his odd season with a mysterious Instagram post.

It’s hard to say with certainty what it meant. It might have been merely a post to cap up the season, or it might be an indication of wanting to move on. In any case, things appear to be going considerably better between Alexander and the Packers than they were prior to the suspension in week 17.

Matt LaFleur said last week that he thinks Jaire Alexander will be a Packer for a long time. I believe him. The only way they move on from him this offseason, in my opinion, is if the suspension doesn’t change anything. The Packers hope it was a wake-up call for Alexander to get in line. If he continues acting out, then maybe they start shopping him. But the leash is a lot longer for players of his caliber, especially given his contract status. Moving on from Alexander, a 26-year-old with two years left on his deal, would leave the Packers with a $27 million dead money charge and cost them more than $3 million in cap space
