Mike Tomlin provides reasoning for the Steelers’ decision to remain in the locker room during the national anthem.

The early game in London between the Jaguars and Ravens suggests that there might be an increase in player protests during the rest of the week’s action. This surge is in response to President Trump’s comments during a rally where he suggested NFL owners should fire players who kneel during the national anthem. Many individuals and entities, including players, teams, team owners, the NFLPA, the league, and former coaches, have criticized the president’s divisive remarks. However, the Pittsburgh Steelers, under coach Mike Tomlin’s direction, have decided not to partake in any pregame protests during their Sunday game against the Bears in Chicago. Tomlin explained that the team will stay in the locker room, emphasizing the importance of unity in these divisive times. He assured players that whatever they choose to do will receive his support, but the team’s actions will be cohesive and unaffected by external divisions. Steelers president Art Rooney II echoed a similar sentiment, while NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell emphasized the league’s commitment to unity and expressed disappointment in divisive comments that show a lack of respect for the NFL and its players.
