As we approach the All-Star Break, it’s time to recognize the standout performers of the New York Rangers at the midseason point. In Peter Laviolette’s inaugural season as head coach, characterized by ups and downs, three players have distinguished themselves for their outstanding contributions since the beginning of the season.

The trio includes a rookie and two linemates who have consistently delivered exceptional performances. One of them secured an All-Star selection due to numerous injuries, another is expecting his second child, and the third epitomizes the desired identity for the future of the New York Rangers. All three players have surpassed expectations in their respective roles. Without further delay, let’s unveil the three stars of the midway point based solely on their individual performances and fulfillment of their designated roles.

This selection may come as a surprise to many readers, considering the certainty of the other two stars in my opinion. Choices for this spot were diverse, including Adam Fox, Chris Kreider, and Jonathan Quick. However, when considering the team as a whole, Will Cuylle has emerged as a bright spot in the Rangers’ lineup.

With Laviolette taking the helm as head coach, questions arose about which players would adapt to his style, with expectations placed on individuals like Kreider and Blake Wheeler. Cuylle, starting the season on the third line, faced some limitations in point production. However, through perseverance and dealing with injuries, he earned shifts on the top line. In 49 games played, Cuylle has amassed 14 points and holds a plus-3 rating, quietly building a solid and somewhat underrated season.

Cuylle’s playing style is marked by physicality, evident in his battles along the boards and his presence in front of the net. Leading all rookies with 128 hits this season, Cuylle addresses the concerns of fans longing for more grit in the team, proving himself as a formidable force on the ice.
