NHL Speculation: Could the St. Louis Blues Revisit Interest in Jakob Chychrun?
Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman discussed Jakob Chychrun’s potential fit with the St. Louis Blues during an appearance on the Jeff Marek Show. Marek referred back to a press conference by Steve Staios where disappointment was expressed regarding Chychrun’s name being circulated as a trade possibility.
Marek recalled the extensive Chychrun trade speculation that lasted about a year and a half before his eventual move. Teams like LA, St. Louis, the Islanders, the Rangers, the Bruins, and the Blue Jackets were mentioned during that period. Marek expressed curiosity about whether Chychrun might still be on the market.
Friedman noted that the discussion surrounding Chychrun likely involves salary cap considerations, especially with his impending contract renewal in mind. He suggested that Ottawa might be preparing for the financial implications of Chychrun’s next contract, sparking trade talks.
Regarding the St. Louis Blues, Friedman paralleled their current situation to 2019 when Doug Armstrong was proactive in the trade market despite doubts about the team’s Stanley Cup prospects. He emphasized Armstrong’s willingness to make bold moves if he deems them necessary. Friedman also highlighted that allowing the team to continue its current form might increase the value of certain players in potential trades.
Furthermore, Friedman pointed out that several Blues players have no-trade protection, which could influence trade negotiations.
