Steelers Bring Back Former Browns DB

In under a month, the Pittsburgh Steelers have once again added defensive back Nate Meadors to their roster. According to Teresa Varley at Steelers.com, Meadors inked a reserve/future contract with the team on February 2.

This deal allows him to join the Steelers for offseason training sessions. Notably, Meadors initially joined the Steelers’ practice squad on December 27 but was released following the playoff defeat to the Buffalo Bills on January 9.

Meadors is rejoining the Steelers after a two-week stint with the Cleveland Browns during the 2023 training camp.

The Steelers have signed Nate Meadors to a Reserve/Futures Contract. Despite having only played in three NFL regular-season games, Meadors brings substantial experience as he enters his sixth NFL campaign in the 2024 season, having started as an undrafted free agent in 2019.

After the 2019 NFL draft, Meadors was initially signed by the Minnesota Vikings. Despite being signed and released multiple times, he spent the 2019 and 2020 seasons with the Vikings. In 2019, he participated in two games, logging 11 defensive snaps and 23 snaps on special teams. In 2020, he played 14 special teams snaps in a single contest.

Following the 2020 season, Meadors joined the Jacksonville Jaguars. In 2021, he was part of the Philadelphia Eagles’ training camp. Besides the Steelers and Browns, Meadors has also been signed by the New York Giants and Tennessee Titans since then.

Meadors, who played for UCLA in the college years spanning from 2015 to 2018, accumulated a total of 149 tackles, which included 4 tackles for loss, 3 interceptions, and 19 pass defenses across 38 college games.

The Steelers, facing a shortage of cornerbacks as they approach the 2024 free agency, are considering Meadors as a potential addition to address their cornerback depth. However, it’s important to note that while Meadors could contribute, he shouldn’t be perceived as the definitive solution for Pittsburgh’s secondary. The cornerback position for the Steelers is currently thin, especially with impending free agency for Levi Wallace, James Pierre, Chandon Sullivan, and Elijah Riley. Additionally, there is a possibility of the veteran Patrick Peterson being cut to create salary cap space.

Considering the potential departures, there are speculations linking the Steelers to cornerbacks like L’Jarius Sneed, a free agent from the Kansas City Chiefs, according to PFF. The Bleacher Report NFL scouting department has also suggested a trade connection between the Steelers and New England Patriots cornerback Jonathan Jones.
