Ex-Washington Commanders Quarterback Identified as Potential Replacement for Browns’ Joe Flacco
The Washington Commanders inked Jacoby Brissett to a one-year contract worth $8 million last offseason. He made appearances in only two games for the Commanders during Weeks 15 and 16. In those outings, Brissett showcased his consistent performance, throwing three touchdowns and zero interceptions, a trend that aligns with his career history. There’s speculation that Brissett could be of assistance to his former team, the Cleveland Browns.
With Washington likely looking to transition away from Brissett this offseason due to their No. 2 draft pick, expected to be used on a quarterback, Brissett is poised to hit the free-agent market, potentially attracting interest from competitive teams. Kristopher Knox of Bleacher Report highlighted Brissett among seven cost-effective NFL free agents.
While the quarterback talent pool in free agency seems somewhat shallow this offseason, Brissett stands out as a reliable option, though unlikely to secure a starting position. He’s proven his capability as both a backup and starter throughout his career, notably filling in for the Browns and Dolphins in recent seasons. Brissett’s performance in 2022 included 2,608 passing yards, 12 touchdowns, 6 interceptions, and a 64% completion rate.
Considering the possibility of Washington drafting a quarterback, retaining Brissett could hold value as a mentor to younger players. Knox emphasized this point, highlighting Brissett’s ability to serve as a quality bridge starter, as reflected in his commendable quarterback ratings with the Browns and Commanders.
Given Deshaun Watson’s injury uncertainty and the Browns’ quarterback instability before Joe Flacco’s successful late-season stint, a return to Cleveland for Brissett seems logical, as noted by Knox. Watson’s recovery from a significant shoulder injury is anticipated for the 2024 season, while Flacco’s unexpected performance propelled the Browns into the playoffs.
