Michigan State and their 2023 quarterback commit Bo Edmundson have mutually agreed to part ways.

The series of decommitments from Michigan State football’s 2023 recruiting class continued on Wednesday when three-star quarterback Bo Edmundson from Lake Travis High School in Austin, Texas, announced on Twitter that he was reopening his recruitment.

Michigan State had previously lost commitments from four-star offensive lineman Clay Wedin and four-star running back Kedrick Reescano in October. However, unlike those instances, Edmundson’s decision to part ways with MSU’s 2023 class seems to be a mutual agreement.

According to reporting from Spartan Tailgate’s Justin Thind, Michigan State has been exploring other options at quarterback for the 2023 class for some time now.

Edmundson initially committed to Mel Tucker and the Spartans in February of that year. The coaching staff, including quarterbacks coach/offensive coordinator Jay Johnson, were impressed by the 6-foot-3, 195-pounder’s size and saw potential for growth during his final high school season.

Ranked No. 433 overall in the country when he committed to Michigan State, Edmundson’s ranking has since fallen to No. 804 over the last nine months due to an ongoing back injury. As a result, he has been limited in his final season at Lake Travis, prompting Michigan State to shift their focus elsewhere.

Thind’s report also indicated that the Spartans will refocus their efforts on pursuing five-star Detroit King quarterback Dante Moore, who is currently committed to Oregon. Moore, a local prospect who was previously considered leaning towards Notre Dame, developed a strong connection with Tucker and Johnson. However, with Edmundson’s commitment, Moore’s interest in Michigan State waned.

While it’s unlikely that the Spartans will sway Moore from Oregon, Thind reported that Michigan State will exhaust all options to flip the Detroit product.

If unsuccessful, Michigan State will need to seek another quarterback for the 2023 class with the early National Signing Day approaching in December.

With Edmundson’s departure, Michigan State’s 2023 class has dropped to No. 39 in the country after briefly reaching the Top 10 earlier in the summer. With only 11 committed prospects, the Spartans have several scholarships available as they aim to finish the recruiting cycle strongly.
