ANGELES — According to league sources that spoke with ESPN’s Adam Schefter on Thursday, the Rams have elevated linebackers coach and pass-rush coordinator Chris Shula to defensive coordinator.

Shula takes over for Raheem Morris, who was the defensive coordinator for the Rams for three seasons before to being brought on as head coach by the Falcons. According to Schefter, the Dolphins wanted to interview Shula for the position of defensive coordinator.

Shula was recruited as a defensive assistant by Rams head coach Sean McVay in February 2017, and he has been in Los Angeles ever since. Before coming to the Rams, he worked for the Chargers for two years as a defensive quality control coach.

From 2004 to 2007, Shula and McVay were Miami (Ohio) teammates in college.

The Rams’ defense, which lost a number of important players in the offseason, including as linebacker Bobby Wagner and cornerback Jalen Ramsey, finished 22nd in terms of overall DVOA in 2023.

Shula is the late Hall of Fame coach Don Shula’s grandson. From 1992 until 1996, his father, David Shula, led the Bengals as head coach.
