Clarification provided regarding the quarterback strategy for the 2024 Raiders.

There’s considerable curiosity about the recent statements from new Las Vegas Raiders coach Antonio Pierce regarding the team’s plans to acquire a quarterback this offseason, while also mentioning that second-year quarterback Aidan O’Connell will be in contention for the starting position.

Here’s my interpretation: The Raiders are seeking an upgrade from O’Connell.

However, I doubt Pierce and the new Las Vegas general manager, Tom Telesco, intend to bring in a quarterback of similar caliber to O’Connell for direct competition. As the saying goes, having two quarterbacks often indicates a lack of a clear starter.

The term “compete” is typical coach-speak, suggesting that everyone on the roster will have an opportunity to vie for the starting role. Realistically, though, the Raiders likely prefer O’Connell, who achieved a 5-5 record as a fourth-round pick in 2023, to serve as the backup.

However, finding a quarterback is notoriously challenging for any team. The Raiders pursued a quarterback last year, ending up with Jimmy Garoppolo, which didn’t yield the desired results.

The Raiders have three avenues to acquire a quarterback this offseason: through the draft, trades, or free agency. With the 13th pick in the draft, they may struggle to secure a top prospect and may turn to the veteran market.

Ultimately, whether O’Connell truly has a shot at competing for the starting role depends on the quality of player the Raiders add to the roster. If they make a substantial investment—a high draft pick, a significant trade, or a lucrative contract—it indicates their intention for the new quarterback to start.

The success of the Raiders in acquiring a starting-quality quarterback will determine O’Connell’s opportunity to compete for the starting spot. This approach by Pierce in early February seems fair and appropriate.
