Haywood Highsmith of the Miami Heat was charged with reckless driving following a serious injury to a man.
Miami Heat forward Haywood Highsmith received a citation for careless driving after being involved in a car crash that resulted in a man sustaining a partially amputated leg.
Highsmith, who was heading home from Miami’s Kaseya Center after the Heat’s victory over the Orlando Magic, was driving five miles per hour above the speed limit when he collided with a disabled car without lights on in the road. A man assisting the disabled vehicle’s owner was injured in the crash. Highsmith’s agent, Jerry Dianis, stated that Highsmith promptly aided the injured person by applying a tourniquet and remained at the scene offering support.
The injured man was transported to the hospital in critical condition with injuries including a partial amputation of his right leg, a fractured left leg, and a possible broken left arm. Highsmith, who was unharmed, was cited for driving carelessly, according to Miami-Dade Police spokesperson Angel Rodriguez.
The Heat expressed sympathy for those injured in the incident. Highsmith missed the Heat’s subsequent game against the San Antonio Spurs due to personal reasons. Despite the incident, Highsmith is expected to rejoin the team for practice.
Highsmith played college basketball at Wheeling University before joining the NBA G League’s Delaware Blue Coats and later signing a three-year deal with the Heat in 2022. He has averaged 5.8 points, 2.8 rebounds, and 1.1 assists while shooting 43.1% from the field in 37 games this season.
