Pittsburgh This week, Cameron Heyward, a defensive lineman for the Pittsburgh Steelers, received one of the greatest accolades an NFL player can receive when he was named the 2023 NFL Walter Payton Man of the Year. This award recognizes the philanthropic contributions NFL players make to their communities.
Although Heyward hasn’t decided how he would use the $250,000 that comes with the honor, the captain of the Steelers already has some ideas and wants to use the funds to support educational programs in the Pittsburgh region.
“I believe I want to focus on a few key topics. Heyward remarked, “I believe I want to carry on working with the communities and organizations I’ve been working with.” However, I believe that there are some schools that you see and think, “Man, I really wish I could help,” and this is a perfect chance to do so.
Even after winning Man of the Year, Heyward is aware that he cannot give up on his commitment to giving back to his home city of Pittsburgh. He is dedicated to this city and the surrounding area, and he sees this award as a launching pad for even bigger things down the road. Additionally, he is taking inspiration from his father, the late, great Craig “Ironhead” Heyward, as well as his parents.
“My dad would have enjoyed himself last night as he was always a huge fan of Walter Payton,” Heyward remarked. “I believe he would be happy about the recognition, but he would also understand that we still have work to do. He would give me a nice pat on the back, but he wouldn’t let me take it easy.”
