Bill O’Brien is set to be appointed as the head football coach at Boston College.

O’Brien is set to take over from Jeff Hafley, who left his position after four seasons to join the Green Bay Packers as their defensive coordinator. Last season, O’Brien served as the offensive coordinator for the New England Patriots under Bill Belichick before transitioning to the same role at Ohio State under head coach Ryan Day. Day, who was previously a quarterbacks coach at BC, prompted O’Brien to make the switch.

When Hafley departed for Green Bay, O’Brien paused his plans with the Buckeyes. His background includes prior roles with the Patriots and as the head coach of the Houston Texans from 2013 to 2020.

O’Brien’s coaching career also saw him take on the role of head coach at Penn State in the aftermath of the Jerry Sandusky scandal. Additionally, he held offensive coordinator positions at Georgia Tech, Duke, and with Nick Saban’s Alabama Crimson Tide. Both Georgia Tech and Duke are members of the Atlantic Coast Conference. BC’s 2024 season kicks off against Florida State on Labor Day.
