Due to cap restrictions, the Los Angeles Rams haven’t been major players in free agency in the last few years, but this offseason, that might very well change.
The Rams have a little over $35 million in cap space right now. Though not the most in the league, more than sufficient to strengthen their roster. It remains to be seen if that is accomplished through a single large deal or a number of smaller ones, but the Rams are in a good position to advance in 2024 following an unexpected 10-win campaign.
The Jacksonville Jaguars pass-rusher Josh Allen would be the ideal target if they choose to go big-game hunting. The Rams are really one of the top destinations for the former seventh overall pick, according to The 33rd Team.
“After the Rams exceeded expectations in 2023, they could be looking to build and get the most out of an aging offense by building up a young defense,” says The 33rd Team. By snap-weighted age, Los Angeles’ defense was the seventh-youngest and its offensive the sixth-oldest this season. Because of their large number of rookie contracts, the team also spent the least on defense in the league.
The Rams have about $27 million in effective cap space, which ranks 13th and could allow them to be more aggressive in free agency than in the past. A defensive line of Allen, Kobie Turner, Aaron Donald, and [Byron] Young could allow Los Angeles’ defense to hang with the league’s best offenses.”
After a career-best 17.5 sacks this season, tied for the second most in the league, Allen figures to be one of the most-coveted free agents on the market this offseason. Spotrac calculates his market value at $23.9 million per year, so any team interested would have to pay up.
The Rams’ biggest need this offseason is an edge rusher because, even with Young’s excellent rookie campaign, they need depth overall at the position. Not only would Allen solve that issue, but he would also provide L.A. with a real edge star.
The Kentucky product has expressed his wish to remain in Jacksonville, but perhaps the Rams would make an offer if the Jaguars are unable to pay him.
