Kalen DeBoer, who recently assumed the role of head coach for the Alabama Crimson Tide, finds himself in the position of needing to find a replacement for his offensive coordinator, Ryan Grubb, just a month into his tenure. Grubb, who followed DeBoer from Washington to Alabama, has decided to leave Tuscaloosa to take on the role of offensive coordinator for the Seattle Seahawks, marking yet another college coach transitioning to the NFL amid the increased demands faced by college coaches due to factors like the NCAA transfer portal and NIL era.
ESPN’s Adam Rittenberg reported that Alabama is likely to promote both Nick Sheridan, the tight ends coach, and JaMarcus Shephard, the wide receivers coach, to the positions of co-offensive coordinators. Additionally, Rittenberg suggested that Sheridan may take on the primary responsibility of playcalling for the Crimson Tide, while also assuming the role of quarterbacks coach, a position previously held by Grubb. Sheridan has past experience working with DeBoer at Indiana and Washington, and he also served as a graduate assistant for the Tennessee Vols under Butch Jones, where he played a significant role in coaching quarterbacks like Josh Dobbs.
Dobbs himself acknowledged Sheridan’s influence on his development as a quarterback during his time at Tennessee, emphasizing their strong relationship and Sheridan’s pivotal role in his success. While Sheridan has called plays before at Indiana, stepping into the SEC as a playcaller will be a new challenge for him. However, his prior experience working closely with quarterbacks, particularly at Tennessee, provides a solid foundation as he navigates this new chapter in his coaching career.
