Leeds may still stand to gain financially from the unexpected signing of Orta, despite initial disappointment.
Leeds United’s transfer strategy prior to the start of this season proved successful, with the club managing to offload several players who had contributed to their relegation to the Championship on loan deals. This cleared space for Daniel Farke to acquire promising talents eager to be part of Leeds’ journey back to the Premier League. Notable signings like Joe Rodon and Ethan Ampadu have excelled in the second tier, transforming a previously porous defense into a more formidable unit.
One player from Leeds’ troubled past, who was part of the defense that conceded a staggering 78 goals, has since moved to Germany. Remarkably, Leeds could still turn a profit on this 26-year-old defender, despite his disappointing stint at Elland Road.
Despite finishing 17th in the Premier League and investing heavily in new recruits, many of these signings have failed to live up to expectations. Victor Orta’s £11 million signing of Wober in January was particularly disappointing. Although Wober initially showed promise, including an impressive performance in a draw against Manchester United, his time at Leeds quickly soured as the club faced the looming threat of relegation.
Wober’s last appearance for Leeds, during a dismal 4-1 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur, epitomized his struggles with the club. However, there is a silver lining to his departure: Leeds could still profit if Wober’s move to Borussia Mönchengladbach becomes permanent.
Despite his challenging spell in England, Wober has seamlessly integrated into Gladbach’s plans and has performed well in the Bundesliga, with a respectable average rating of 7.06 on Sofascore from 16 appearances this season. This has led to an increase in his transfer value, despite the difficulties he faced during his time at Leeds.
