Zane Denton’s situation with Tennessee Baseball remains uncertain.
Tennessee’s baseball squad has been back on campus for a fortnight, with the upcoming 2024 season looming just over three weeks away. However, there’s uncertainty surrounding Zane Denton’s status with the Vols.
Despite Denton’s announcement of his return for a super senior season last August, he was absent from the team during fall practice due to personal matters. Presently, he isn’t participating in team workouts, leaving his role in the upcoming season ambiguous.
Coach Tony Vitello expressed the complexity of Denton’s situation, emphasizing the absence of clear-cut answers. Denton, who transferred from Alabama in 2023, initially intended to play one season with Tennessee before pursuing a professional baseball career. However, going undrafted in the last MLB Draft altered his plans, leading to a period of reassessment.
Vitello highlighted Denton’s significant contributions to Tennessee’s journey to the College World Series last season, particularly his pivotal home runs against Clemson. Despite Denton’s uncertainty, Tennessee has acquired other infield options like Billy Amick from Clemson via the transfer portal.
The Vols kick off their 2024 season against Texas Tech, Oklahoma, and Baylor in Dallas, followed by matchups against Illinois and a challenging SEC schedule featuring formidable opponents such as LSU, Florida, and Vanderbilt.
