Lions Expected to Ink Former All-Pro Defensive End from Rival Team to $67 Million Contract

The Detroit Lions are anticipated to address their team’s vulnerable pass defense during the upcoming offseason. According to Bleacher Report’s David Kenyon, the Lions are projected to sign former Minnesota Vikings defensive end Danielle Hunter to a three-year, $67 million deal, with $51 million guaranteed.

Hunter, a second-team All-Pro in 2018 and a four-time Pro Bowler, recorded a career-best 16.5 sacks in 2023, leading the NFL with 23 tackles for loss, 22 quarterback hits, and 4 forced fumbles.

Despite turning 32 during the proposed three-year contract, Hunter is seen as a suitable addition for the Lions. The team excelled in various pass-rushing analytics in the previous season but ranked 23rd in sacks. Adding Hunter would provide a Pro Bowl edge rusher opposite Aidan Hutchinson, potentially resulting in a formidable pass-rushing duo.

While James Houston, initially expected to complement Hutchinson, missed most of the 2023 season due to injury, the Lions could still pursue an elite edge rusher like Hunter. The addition of Hunter, coming off a career year, could elevate the Lions’ defensive line to elite status.

However, questions about fit within the team’s culture and Hunter’s age (turning 30 in October) raise considerations for the Lions. General manager Brad Holmes emphasized a commitment to long-term solutions, aiming to sustain the team’s growth. The possibility of targeting a young edge rusher in the 2024 NFL Draft is also being discussed, with various mock drafts linking the Lions to prospects such as Darius Robinson, Chop Robinson, JT Tuimoloau, and T’Vondre Sweat.

Despite the potential impact of signing Hunter, the Lions may weigh their options and evaluate the fit with their long-term strategy, considering the upcoming NFL Draft as an alternative route to bolster their pass defense.
