“Top two contenders” for local defensive lineman prospect following recent visit to Tennessee.
Mackenzie Holmes found herself unable to restrain her tears. Despite her efforts to ignore the inevitable, the moment she had been anticipating arrived. With 5:15 left in the fourth quarter against Purdue, Holmes, Indiana women’s basketball’s All-American forward, surpassed the program’s all-time scoring record in front of a crowd of 13,304 at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall.
Executing her trademark move, Holmes received a pass from Yarden Garzon, maneuvered into the post, and left her opponent trailing as she scored the historic basket off the glass. Reflecting on the achievement, Holmes expressed gratitude for her teammates, coaches, and the opportunity to represent Indiana.
Although she contributed 17 points and four rebounds to lead No. 14 Indiana to a decisive victory over Purdue, Holmes remained humble amidst the attention, emphasizing her team-first mentality. Her tears symbolized not only the record-breaking moment but also the support of everyone who had stood by her throughout her journey.
