Philip Broberg is demonstrating his potential: Will he be given a chance to play in the NHL with the Oilers or with another team?

In Bakersfield, California, it takes mere moments to spot the player who most resembles an NHL-caliber athlete during Bakersfield Condors practice. With his smooth skating, puck composure, and lean yet muscular physique, Philip Broberg possesses all the attributes of a standout defenseman at the highest level—a fact becoming increasingly evident with each passing day.

According to Condors coach Colin Chaulk, Broberg’s consistent growth in maturity, strength, composure, and poise is unmistakable.

In the AHL, Broberg shines, often logging nearly 30 minutes of ice time per game and partnering with veteran Ben Gleason. He commands the power play, which has transformed from one of the league’s weakest units to one of its strongest, and excels in penalty-killing duties.

Despite being drafted eighth by the Edmonton Oilers in 2019, Broberg, now in his fifth season, has spent significant time in Bakersfield, unable to secure a permanent spot with the Oilers. At 22, he still has ample room for development, but the patience wears thin.

Oilers assistant coach Paul Coffey acknowledges Broberg’s tenure in the system and understands his desire for NHL playtime. However, Oilers GM Ken Holland emphasizes Broberg’s immense value as a 6-foot-4 defenseman and dismisses trade speculation.

Broberg’s potential trade candidacy stems from his status as a highly regarded prospect hindered by a logjam of defensemen on the Oilers’ roster. Reports surfaced in December suggesting Broberg sought a trade after being recalled but subsequently benched for several games.

Returned to Bakersfield to regain regular playing time, Broberg has flourished, demonstrating his skill with a goal and 17 points in 25 games since his demotion.

Though Broberg remains committed to his NHL ambitions, Holland stresses the importance of patience and believes Broberg is ready for NHL action. However, with six healthy defensemen ahead of him, Broberg finds himself as the seventh in line—a situation Holland finds unsuitable for his development.

Despite challenges, Broberg perseveres, striving to improve while awaiting his opportunity. Whether that opportunity arises in Edmonton or elsewhere remains uncertain.
