The Cincinnati Bengals surprised some by announcing the departure of veteran quarterback AJ McCarron on February 14th, while others, like NFL reporter Howard Balzer, anticipated this move. Balzer revealed that McCarron requested his release from the Bengals to join the UFL’s St. Louis Battlehawks, a decision expected to be finalized on February 15th.
Confirmation of McCarron’s move came from UFL insider James Larsen on the same day. He reported McCarron’s intention to rejoin the Battlehawks, emphasizing the significance of his return to the team.
Balzer provided further details on McCarron’s UFL schedule, noting his contract termination on February 14th and the upcoming training camp and season commencement.
Although McCarron’s involvement with the UFL doesn’t rule out a return to the Bengals later, their quarterback options are currently limited, with Jake Browning as the sole backup behind Joe Burrow. Browning’s status as an exclusive rights free agent enhances his value, as he remains the Bengals’ property until he accrues three seasons in the NFL.
Browning, who expressed confidence in his ability to start in the NFL after the 2023 season, faces uncertainty regarding his future role with the Bengals.
