Betts Expresses Confidence in Securing Spot on Final Roster
The Detroit Lions made an early offseason addition to their roster by signing Mathieu Betts, the reigning CFL Most Outstanding Defensive Player. Betts, who previously had a shot in the NFL with the Chicago Bears as an undrafted free agent in 2019 but couldn’t secure a roster spot, is now aiming to compete for a place on the Lions’ roster for the 2024 season.
Expressing his confidence in making the cut, Betts stated via 3DownNation, “I’m excited for the opportunity to be able to compete and to try to make that roster and I feel like I have a really good chance of doing it.” Despite having other NFL opportunities offering guaranteed money, Betts chose to sign with Detroit after feeling a strong connection during his visit and workout with the team in December.
Regarding his fit with Detroit’s defense, Betts mentioned, “They saw my strength on film and that’s something that they really liked, that fit their team in terms of working hard.” He emphasized that the Lions recognized his hard work ethic, which was evident on film, before assessing his athletic and football capabilities.
In other news, former Lions quarterback David Blough has joined the Washington Commanders’ coaching staff as the assistant quarterbacks coach. Blough, who started five games for Detroit from 2019-21 and spent last year on the practice squad, is making the transition to coaching.
