The Pittsburgh Steelers have swiftly begun trimming their roster, with quarterback Mitch Trubisky, offensive tackle Chukwuma Okorafor, and punter Pressley Harvin being released on Monday. Further cuts are expected, with cornerback Patrick Peterson potentially among them.
In discussion on his podcast “All Things Covered” alongside former Steeler Bryant McFadden, Peterson expressed his desire to continue playing, but acknowledged that his future with the Steelers hinges on their decision.
“I’m keen to continue playing,” Peterson stated. “The uncertainty lies with whether the Steelers envision me concluding my career with them.”

Peterson was signed by the Steelers to a two-year contract in 2023 following Cam Sutton’s departure in free agency. With a $3 million roster bonus due in March, releasing him before then would allow the team to avoid this financial obligation and allocate resources towards other potential acquisitions.
The Steelers find themselves in need of another starting-caliber cornerback to complement Joey Porter Jr. Neither Peterson nor Levi Wallace have demonstrated enough to secure that role permanently. Should Peterson remain with the team, it would likely be in a rotational capacity, primarily in the slot or safety positions, as he adopted towards the end of 2023 due to various injuries.
