to include automatic bids for power-conference champions, a spot for the highest-ranked Group of Five team, and seven at-large berths, the key for teams is to rank within the Top 10. Throughout the ten-year history of the CFP, Tennessee has achieved this feat only once in 2022, while NC State has yet to do so.

Nevertheless, both schools have consistently hovered near this ranking in various seasons. Tennessee reached as high as 13th in 2023 and secured Top 25 finishes in 2015 and 2016, while NC State has attained Top 25 rankings in each of the past four years, as well as in 2017.

The outlook appears more favorable for the team that emerges victorious from the Charlotte matchup on September 7th, as it sets the tone for their Week 2 performance.
