During Josh Heupel’s initial two years at Tennessee, there was relatively little turnover among his coaching staff. However, he experienced departures such as WR coach Kodi Burns, who joined the Saints after just one season, and offensive coordinator/tight ends’ coach Alex Golesh, who became head coach at USF following the 2022 season.

Within a week after Golesh’s departure, Tennessee saw two more coaches leave: former running backs’ coach Jerry Mack joined the Jacksonville Jaguars, and Jean-Mary returned to the Big 10 to coach linebackers under new UM Head Coach Sherrone Moore.

While we’ve discussed Mack’s departure and its implications, it’s clear that Tennessee has lost two valuable assistants this week.

Jean-Mary’s impact speaks for itself. Despite challenges like Jeremy Banks’ troubled history and the disruptive presence of Juwan Mitchell, Jean-Mary managed to foster player development, notably with Aaron Beasley, and handle recruiting adeptly.

On the recruiting front, Jean-Mary has shown prowess, particularly with his success at Michigan and Tennessee, securing commitments from notable prospects like Arion Carter and Caleb Herring.

Looking ahead, Heupel faces the challenge of finding replacements who can match Jean-Mary’s recruiting abilities and player development skills, all while hoping for a smooth transition amid the timing of these departures.
