Baseball enthusiasts from Tennessee who traveled to Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas for the Shriners Children’s College Showdown witnessed a remarkable event in their team’s history on Saturday.
In a game locked at 1-1 against Oklahoma in the top of the seventh inning, the 8th-ranked Tennessee Volunteers executed a rare triple play against their opponents. Not only did this play end the inning in Tennessee’s favor, but it also marked the first triple play in the program’s history since February 22, 1997, when they faced Eastern Kentucky.
The sequence began with a Jaxon Willits bunt that hung in the air just long enough for left-handed pitcher Chris Stamos, who was making his debut for the Vols, to make a diving catch from the pitcher’s mound.
Stamos, who had inherited runners on first and second base, then swiftly tossed the ball to shortstop Christian Moore, who tagged the advancing Kendall Pettis on second base. Moore then proceeded to tag Scott Mudler, completing the 1-6 triple play.
