Manfred Discloses Possible All-Star Schedule for Cubs

It has been over three decades since Wrigley Field last saw the MLB All-Star Game, but that drought might soon come to an end.

MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred recently discussed potential host cities for upcoming All-Star Games, identifying Toronto and Chicago as potential contenders for the 2027 and 2028 events.

The next three All-Star Games already have designated locations. The Texas Rangers will host at Globe Life Field in 2024, followed by the Atlanta Braves at Truist Park in 2025, and the Philadelphia Phillies at Citizens Bank Park in 2026.

Following this lineup, the spotlight may finally shine on the Cubs.

Manfred, who plans to retire from his commissioner role in 2029, has two more All-Star Game locations to select. In a recent article for The Athletic, he highlighted the Cubs and Toronto Blue Jays as top candidates for the 2027 and 2028 events.

“When considering those two years, I am greatly influenced by two factors,” Manfred shared with The Athletic. “Firstly, the length of time since the last game hosted by each city. Toronto fares favorably in this regard. However, Chicago has historical precedence.”

Both teams haven’t hosted the All-Star Game since the early 1990s, with the Blue Jays last hosting in 1991 and the Cubs in 1990.

“The city’s willingness to meet certain criteria is another significant factor,” Manfred emphasized. “Our All-Star events, which now span most of the week, require specific facilities and support, including security.”

As the third-largest city in the U.S., Chicago is well-prepared to handle the Midsummer Classic. The Cubs have previously hosted the event three times, in 1947, 1962, and 1990, since its inception in 1933.

With 30 teams in MLB, the Cubs are undoubtedly overdue. While Manfred has faced criticism during his tenure, granting Wrigley Field the All-Star Game is a decision most fans would welcome.
