Three Atlanta Falcons players with the highest probability of having their contracts restructured this spring
As it stands, the Atlanta Falcons find themselves in an advantageous position concerning the salary cap. They currently boast approximately $30 million under the cap, ranking 14th best in the NFL and approximately $10 million better than the league average. This surplus is largely attributed to the team’s reasonable investment in their starting quarterback, allowing flexibility in allocating funds to other players.
However, I believe that merely securing the right quarterback for the future this offseason may not suffice to propel Atlanta into serious contention mode. Despite playing in one of the weaker divisions in football, the Falcons face formidable opponents in the New Orleans Saints and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who have clinched the last three division titles.
Presently, the Falcons possess ample cap space to pursue and potentially acquire marquee free agents. Ideally, securing three impactful players would enhance their roster significantly. To achieve this goal, some of the team’s seasoned and respected veterans may need to consider restructuring their contracts to create additional financial flexibility. Fortunately, the individuals best suited for this are team-oriented players.
Here are three players that general manager Terry Fontenot should consider for contract restructuring:
Chris Lindstrom, who carries an $18 million cap hit for the 2024 NFL season, stands out as one of the team’s premier players. Regarded as one of the top interior offensive linemen in the league, Lindstrom’s significance to the franchise is invaluable. His recent five-year contract extension, signed last season, reflects his elevated status, with a total value of $102.5 million through the 2028 season.
Despite having yet to play under his new contract, Lindstrom’s salary has seen a substantial increase from a little over $13 million last year to $18 million this year, escalating to $23.25 million by 2027. Fortunately, there is potential to restructure his annual signing bonuses, which amount to $5.5 million per year through 2027.
While the financial means exist for the Falcons to negotiate a restructure with Lindstrom, it appears improbable given his recent salary boost. Additionally, there are two more seasoned veterans ahead of him who may be eligible for deferred guaranteed money in future years. Considering Lindstrom’s loyalty to the team, it seems unlikely that he will consider a restructure at this juncture, allowing him to enjoy his newfound salary for the time being.
