A choice regarding Justin Fields will influence the Broncos’ quarterback strategies.
The NFL concluded the Super Bowl last week, and we’re now a week away from the NFL Scouting Combine. I’m heading to the Combine this week, and while the news from the league has been slow, I’m fine with that. It’s a welcomed break in the action, allowing me to take a day off, my first since July, given the NFL’s current lull.
I also enjoy reflecting on life and sports while cruising around with the top down on my old Jeep Wrangler TJ. Here are some thoughts that came to mind during those drives this week.
Let’s dive into my musings.

Could the Steelers be Blocking the Broncos?
The future of Chicago Bears quarterback Justin Fields remains uncertain. With Fields, a former first-round pick still in development, and the Bears holding the No. 11 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, speculation abounds. It’s highly probable that the Bears will select USC quarterback Caleb Williams with that pick, but whether it’s the Bears or another team making that choice remains to be seen.
The key factor in the Bears potentially moving off the pick (perhaps with the Broncos) revolves around their evaluation of Fields and what they could receive in return for him. While Chicago has stated they won’t trade Fields (as expected), recent speculation suggests he could land in Pittsburgh.
There’s word that Steelers’ head coach Mike Tomlin is a strong supporter of Fields, and Pittsburgh may seek an upgrade from Kenny Pickett. Fields could command a first-round pick in exchange, a price tag that Chicago might find appealing. Until we know the Broncos’ plans, developments like the potential movement of Fields need to occur.
I personally don’t believe the Broncos are eyeing Fields, as he doesn’t align with what HC Sean Payton seeks in a quarterback (timing, rhythm). However, if the Bears part ways with him, they’re likely to select Williams first overall. If they stick with Fields, teams like the Washington Commanders and New England Patriots, picking behind them, will either target one of the other top college quarterbacks or demand higher compensation for their picks. In either scenario, the Steelers could influence the Broncos’ strategies.
