Lauri Markkanen of the Jazz Shares Insights on Representing Finland at NBA All-Star Event.
Despite falling short of earning NBA All-Star honors this season, Utah Jazz forward Lauri Markkanen still participated in the prestigious weekend by competing in Saturday’s Starry 3-Point Contest. This marked his second consecutive appearance in the event, this time held in Indianapolis.
Speaking at Media Day before the contest, Markkanen shared his thoughts on the significance of representing his native Finland during NBA All-Star Weekend:
“I take great pride in representing Finland. I’m really focused on advancing the game in Finland as well, just by playing in the NBA. It means a lot to me to represent the country every summer and also in the NBA. So, I take a lot of pride in that.”
Throughout his seven-year NBA career, Markkanen has consistently demonstrated his commitment to representing his Finnish heritage. Last offseason, headlines highlighted Markkanen’s decision to fulfill his citizenship obligations by completing his mandatory military service during the summer. His deep sense of pride for his country is evident.
Although Markkanen didn’t emerge victorious in the 3-Point Contest, he put forth a commendable performance, scoring 25 points in the first round, securing fifth place in the competition. Ultimately, Damian Lillard clinched the win for the second consecutive year.
With the All-Star festivities concluded and the remainder of the season ahead, Markkanen and the Jazz team will focus on regaining momentum in the Play-In race, aiming to secure a top-ten seed in the competitive Western Conference by season’s end.
