Auston Matthews closes in on scoring 50 goals as the Maple Leafs defeat the Blues to kick off their road trip.
Matthews is on the verge of potentially setting a new speed record for the Maple Leafs to reach 50 goals, with just one more needed in his 54th game, which is scheduled for Wednesday. This game will be played in front of a gathering of friends and family after the team’s 4-2 victory in St. Louis during a holiday matinee.
Both Matthews and his upcoming opponent scored in the game. Although playing in his backyard isn’t a new experience for Matthews, he is excited that his neighbor from Phoenix will get to witness the excitement, even though the venue, Mullett Arena in Tempe, with its 5,000-seat capacity, falls below NHL standards.
Speaking to the media in St. Louis, Matthews expressed his anticipation for playing at home. He emphasized the importance of his friend soaking in the experience, having fun, and giving it his all. Despite the desire for good weather and relaxation, Matthews stressed the need for preparation for the upcoming game on Wednesday.
