Broncos Set to Negotiate Contract with Linebacker Josey Jewell

Lloyd Cushenberry likely stands out as the primary unrestricted free agent target for the Broncos, though several key defensive starters are nearing the end of their contracts. One such player integral to the team’s defensive scheme is Josey Jewell.

Despite joining the team in 2018, Jewell has stronger ties to the current Denver leadership than many of his teammates, having been acquired during Vance Joseph’s tenure as head coach. With Joseph returning as defensive coordinator, Jewell and Justin Simmons, both brought in to fit his system, have maintained their value. While Simmons is already under contract, the Broncos are also keen on securing Jewell’s services for another term.

According to 9News’ Mike Klis, the Broncos are scheduled to engage in discussions with Jewell’s representatives at the Combine. Jewell recently concluded a two-year, $11 million deal and served as a regular starter alongside Alex Singleton. He, Simmons, and Courtland Sutton are the sole remaining players from Joseph’s tenure as head coach. The Combine, running from February 26 to March 4, presents an opportunity for negotiations, with the Broncos having exclusive rights to negotiate with Jewell until the legal tampering period begins on March 11.

Since forming the Jewell-Singleton tandem in 2022, the Broncos have enjoyed solid performances from their linebackers. Pro Football Focus has consistently rated Jewell as more reliable than Singleton, despite the latter’s impressive tackle count. Jewell’s versatility proved crucial in bolstering the Broncos’ defense after a lackluster start, amassing 108 tackles, two forced fumbles, and three fumble recoveries. Although not among the top 40, PFF ranked Jewell just outside, contrasting with Singleton, whose 177 tackles ranked among the top seven in a single season during the 21st century. Singleton is tied to a three-year, $18 million contract.

Benefiting from a relatively subdued inside linebacker market, the Broncos secured Jewell and Singleton on manageable contracts last season. Given the number of linebackers signing deals worth between $5 to $8 million annually in 2023, it’s unlikely that Jewell, aged 29, will command a substantially higher salary this time around. Nevertheless, as a dependable starter, the former fourth-round pick should still hold significant value.

While the Broncos have parted ways with stalwarts Brandon Marshall and Alexander Johnson during Jewell’s tenure, they’ve retained the Iowa alum as a starter. The addition of Drew Sanders in the 2023 third round, identified as a hybrid player with edge support capabilities, raises questions about the team’s commitment to retaining Jewell. Additionally, nose tackle Mike Purcell and safety P.J. Locke, who emerged as a productive starter in his contract year, are also heading for free agency.
